In DT this term, we made our own pop up toys. We looked at some examples of toys that pop up and discussed how this movement is possible. We then discussed cam mechanisms and explored the different shapes and sizes cams can be, and the effect each shape has on the toy’s movement.
A cam and follower mechanism
We decided that once we had made our cam mechanisms, we would decorate and design them based on traditional tales, linking it to the learning in Reception classes. We had fun going to Reception and showing off our pop up cam mechanisms, and the Larch and Laurel children enjoyed looking at and playing with our handmade toys.
