High 5 Netball tournament

On Tuesday 28th March a team of 7 travelled to Great Baddow High School to participate in their first High 5 Competition. We played in a pool of 5 teams. Our first game was against Writtle Junior School which we won 4-0. This filled us with confidence, but we knew that we had lots more talented teams to play. Our next game was against Newlands Spring and the final score was 4-1 to us. Next we played Barnes Farm Junior School and won 4-0 and finally we played Perryfields. We entered the final game feeling confident after our previous wins but we were anxious that they were a good team, who had also won all of their games so far. Luckily, we continued to play extremely well and won the game 5-0! We achieved 1st place at this competition and are through to the finals on the 2nd May. A fantastic well done to all of our players, they worked well as a team and played each position they were given with great skill!

Dodgeball Regional Finals – 24th February 2017

The school sent 11 year 5/6 children to the Dodgeball County Championships at Deanes School in Benfleet. This was the next step on from our victorious tournament in Chelmsford.

There were 11 teams split into 3 groups, with each team playing each other in their groups to win points. The winners and runners up of each group then went into another group tournament and then on to a semi final and finishing with a final game to find the winner.

In Lawford Mead’s first game, we looked nervous, but fortunately the games were best of 3. We drew the first, and then won the following 2. We were much more confident as the tournament went on, winning the following 2 games to ease through our group comfortably as winners.

We went through to the following group confident and with winning momentum behind us. We had 2 more games to play before reaching the semi final. We came together as a team and saw out the 2 games as comfortable victors.

The semi final was over as quick as it begun, with a quick 2-0 win. Lawford Mead were progressing confidently through this competition.

In the final, we were facing a team we had already beaten twice. The other team used this to their advantage and started with a game plan that took Lawford Mead by surprise. 1-0 to the other team. Lawford Mead showed resilience and turned the game on its head, making it 1-1. The next game was the decider. Unfortunately, the game went to Bournemouth Park with a speedy attack, that resulted in half of the team being out. The game ended quickly, with Lawford Mead finishing runners up in the game AND in the tournament.

A tremendous achievement from these 11 players, finishing top in Chelmsford and 2nd in Essex. Well done Lawford Mead.

Chelsea FC Football tournament – 9th January 2017

This was our first football match of 2017 and it was typical January weather, cold winds and sideways rain. When we arrived we were told we were in Group 1 and would play 3 matches. After a quick warm up we played our first game against Writtle Junior School.

Harvey scored our first goal, followed soon by Bobby and then Harvey scored his second goal of the match. After some good chances for Writtle and great saves from Callum the final whistle was blown and we had won our first game 3-0. Our second match was against Perryfields, a team we had played before and knew how well they played. Early on Perryfields scored their first goal and despite good defending and passing from Lawford Mead, Perryfields scored a second goal with the game finishing 2-0 to Perryfields. We then had a quick break which gave us time to catch our breath and reflect after such a fierce game against Perryfields. After a quick shuffle of positions we were then up to play Baddow Hall. The game was full of equal chances and both teams played exceptionally well and the final whistle blew at 1-1 with our goal coming from Harvey.  We were then told we would be playing all the teams again as part of the round. So we grabbed a snack discussed our positions and went back up against Writtle. This time Writtle knew what to expect and played superbly, defending and attacking and despite many chances the game finished 1-1 with Matthew scoring our goal. Next up was Perryfields, we were determined to win as they were the only team we had lost against. Matthew started us off with an early goal to put us 1-0 up. Perryfields played at their usual high level but despite great defending Harvey was able to get another goal past them with the whistle blowing with a 2-0 win to Lawford Mead. After another quick break standing in the rain, we were up against Baddow hall.  Again, the game was full of equal chances and the two teams were equally matched and the game finished 0-0.

The referees then called up the teachers to tell for the results of the group stages. I then went back to tell the team that there were 3 teams in our group each with 11 points and the winner was decided on the amount of goals. She then told us we had won our group stage and were off to play in the semi-finals! We were then to play Moulsham who were the runner up of Group 2.

Moulsham got an early goal and we were pushing hard to score. Chance after chance with great saves by their keeper and suddenly Matthew scored!!! We then went onto extra time and golden goal. Moulsham pushed hard and we defended harder keeping the score at 1-1 after extra time. The winner would then be decided on sudden death penalties.

With myself and Mrs Burrells nervously biting our nails, Moulsham stepped up to take their penalty. 1-0. Bobby’s turn. 1-1. Moulsham took it to 2-1. Harvey’s turn. 2-0. Moulsham stepped up, shot and Callum saved it! This was our chance. Callum A stepped up. Our hearts were beating so fast as he hit the ball straight into the back of the net! We had made it to the final! Commiserations to Moulsham as it was a really enjoyable match to watchthe boys were polite and respectful.

We were then straight into our next match against Mildmay. They were a strong and quick team and despite wonderful defending and goalkeeping skills they managed to score 3 goals. Lawford Mead kept their heads held high and despite a phenomenal goal from Bobby from the half way line it wasn’t enough and we finished the game losing 3-1 to Mildmay. Huge congratulations to Mildmay who played a great game.

Although we didn’t win I was really, really proud of their performance. They helped make decisions about who was to play where, respected decisions I made about the squad and listened carefully to myself and, more importantly, each other during the games. It was a real pleasure to watch them play and learn. The boys were excellent role models for the school and I was really proud to be standing with them (despite the rain and wind) as they represented Lawford Mead.

At the athletics

On Friday 6th January, 30 children from year 5 and 6 went to Chelmsford Athletics Centre to take part in an ‘Athletics Olympics.’ There were 5 other schools competing alongside Lawford Mead.

When we arrived, we were told which activities we were going to compete in and were also told when each activity was going to start.

Just some of the activities included: vertical jump, under and over, two vs two relay and obstacle relay. Every athlete that took part competed very well, tried their very best and looked quite exhausted at the end. This resilience and passion resulted in the school coming second overall.

As well as the athletes taking part, other students also took part by being reporters and photographers. It was great to capture the winning moments.

Overall, we were delighted with the outcome of coming 2nd place because it also meant that we made it to the final! Our school showed great aspiration and resilience throughout the event. We are so proud of the whole team.

Football Finals

After winning the regional finals, we qualified for the county finals, so off to Colchester we went.  This was a big opportunity for our team and we were nervous and excited at the same time to test ourselves against the best teams in the county.  There were 32 teams that had qualified and were all at an extremely high standard. Most of the games we played were draws but as a team we learnt a lot from the experience and will take away some valuable lessons to help improve ourselves as a team.  Well done boys you did our school proud.

Girls Football Match – 22nd November 2016

This was our first girl’s football league match. The girls had been working hard developing their skills and resilience and giving up their lunch time to get in some extra practice.  As the game started the girls’ dedication really showed.  It was the first time the girls had had the opportunity to play as a team in a competitive match and played with huge amounts of enthusiasm and passion. Their determination paid off when Zainab broke through the strong Kings Road defence to score our first goal. In the second half Lawford Mead continued to push hard and Frankie struck a right footed volley straight in to the top corner of the goal. 2-0!! Kings Road matched the determination and carried on working hard to score a goal before the final whistle blew, making the final score 2-1 to Lawford Mead. Well done girls, a great first game.

Year 5 & 6 Cross Country – 17th November 2016

Miss Lindsay, Miss Chittick and Mrs Archer took 24 year 5 and 6 children over to Melbourne Park, to say it was wet was an understatement! As we all stood huddled under the tarpaulin that we had originally brought to sit on, and the hail stones started to fall we considered turning around and returning to school. We were then ushered into the sports hall where we attempted to dry off and were told that the races would still go ahead. The children were taken out race at a time into the sunshine and onto the soggy field while the rest of us stayed in the hall playing games. The races started and LawfordMead ran as well as they could. The overall results were year 5 girls finishing 9th, Year 5 boys finishing 6th, Year 6 girls finishing 8th and year 6 boys finishing 6th. Well done all of you for showing resilience and determination.

Year 3 and 4 Dodgeball Tournament – 10th November 2016

It was that time again to host our termly Lawford Mead Dodgeball tournament.  Miss Lindsay and the children were super excited to be playing in another dodgeball competition. This time we were able to field 5 teams and welcome Bishops school and Margaretting school.  The pupils all waited eagerly and listened carefully as Miss Lindsay explained all the rules and then the competition began.  The games were all played at such a high tempo with some outstanding dodgeball being played.  As always, the crowd played their part by creating a fantastic atmosphere that spurred all the teams on.  With the crowd roaring them on the final approached it was Lawford Mead vs Lawford Mead.  The final was so tense with the score at 1-1 after 2 games. The match game down to sudden death and with the pressure mounting Lawford Mead B managed to hold their nerve and take the title! Well done Lawford Mead B and all the teams who came and competed.
