Rounders tournament

On 23rd May we took a team of year 5 & 6 children to a Great Baddow High School for a rounders tournament.  This was our first experience of playing rounders against other schools. We played 2 games; won one and lost one.  We all thoroughly enjoyed it and gained a lot of valuable experience. We are looking forward to sharing our knowledge with the rest of the school and playing more rounders against other schools in the future.

Walk to Rio

On Friday Poplar class stood outside the school with their homemade Olympic torches accompanied by Mrs Barnard, staff from CSAC and an olympic mascot cheering on St Pius school as they arrived with an Olympic torch. The torch was then passed to Lawford Mead and was carried by the Poplar class all the way to Newland Spring. Lawford Mead were part of 43 schools and 2000 children who helped walk the torch around Chelmsford from school to school. Altogether the schools managed to walk the torch to Rio by walking 160,000,000 steps! Well done to all the schools involved a great team effort and a big thank you to the staff (especially Steph) who helped us walk to Newland Spring and make this possible, we are so happy to have been part it.

Football League

On Tuesday 17th May Lawford Mead played their penultimate football league match against Westlands School. Despite the long walk there the boys played with resilience and great determination and were matched by the team from Westlands. Minutes before the whistle, the score stood at 2-1 to Lawford Mead, then Westlands equalised making the final score 2-2. Lawford Mead have played 6 matches in their league, won 4 and  drawn 2 with only 1 match to play and the other teams playing superbly the league has got really exciting and we are really proud of the achievements of all the children who have represented the school.  Watch this space to see how we get on in our upcoming final match…

Mini Wimbledon

On the 16th May Lawford Mead took 2 teams of year 3 & 4 to Great Baddow Tennis Club to compete in a Mini Wimbledon competition against other Chelmsford Schools. The competition was a great platform to improve their tennis skills and learn more about how to play the game. The children were guided by the referees and members of staff from the tennis club. The boys and girls competed separately and after 4 matches Lawford B team played for 9th/10th place and Lawford A played for 5th/6th place. After some exciting games and the chance to show off some of their newly acquired skills, Lawford A team came 5th and Lawford B came 10th. It was amazing to see the children enjoying themselves so much and being so respectful of each other and the other schools. As a result of coming 5th Lawford Mead A team have made it to the finals in June! Well done! Best get the strawberries ready for another exciting tournament!

Kwik Cricket competition

On the 4th May, 9 children entered into a ‘Kwik Cricket’ tournament at sunny Great Waltham Cricket Club. The first match was against Great Waltham School. Each team had a chance to field and bat. Lawford Mead won the toss and batted first. The team scored a good number of runs then after the last batsman was out, it was their turn to field. Great Waltham did well and Lawford Mead even gave away some runs due to ‘no balls’. At the end of the match it was declared that Lawford Mead had won the match! Great Leighs school then played Great Waltham and they won. This meant Lawford Mead had to win their game against Great Leighs to ensure they went into the final and the tournament wasn’t a 3 way draw. Great Leighs went up to bat first and scored a really impressive number of runs. Then it was Lawford Mead’s turn. The pressure was really on! Great Leighs fielding was exceptional and one by one the Lawford Mead batting team were being caught out. The number of runs kept coming. Bobby was the last man up to bat and Lawford Mead were still trailing behind. The atmosphere was tense. Miss Chittick, Mr Moss and the teacher from Great Leighs were biting their nails and counting how many more runs were needed from Bobby. On the last bowl only 1 more run was needed from Bobby to win the game. He hit the ball and ran. 1 run. 2 runs! Lawford Mead won the game and were into the finals!! It was a really exciting game and Great Leighs and Great Waltham were amazing competitors and it was a really exciting competition. Well done to all of the schools involved and a huge well done to Lawford Mead. IMG_8684 (2)

Year 5 and 6 Dodgeball Tournament

Following on from the success of the year 3 and 4 dodgeball tournament year 5 and 6 had their chance to shine. This time 7 schools from Chelmsford came to join us and compete. The level of competition was really high and resulted in some really exciting matches.  The atmosphere was electric and the spectators made the tournament even more thrillling.   All the children who competed showed great resilience and respect we were so proud of Lawford Mead and all the visiting schools.

My experience at the Year 5/6 Dodgeball Tournament

Our excitement was taking over us as it came to the end of the day. We all knew a couple of minutes away that we would make the school proud. Entering the hall we were asking:

“Am I with him?” “Please let me be with her!”

Then the best sport teachers ever (Miss Lindsay and Mr Moss) told us where we were and before we knew it we were all in our teams and practising for the ‘main event’. We were all ready to go after about 30 minutes of training. (Just to add in we were in two ‘leagues’ both including 4 teams) then, to our excitement the tournament had started. Unfortunately, not one of our teams started, but to our amazement the two teams who started in our groups were playing league matches before our eyes.

The matches were played until a team had won two matches, the reason for this is that to make it fair they had to add a ‘certain win point’. Finally the first matches were over and it was time for our two teams -Lawford 1 and Lawford 2- to hit the floor to show the other schools who’s boss! After both of the teams won, hard fought victories, we were prepared for whatever was going to come at us! We must have been ready because we won all our matches.Following this, two playoffs took place; Lawford 1 vs Lawford 2 and Bishops vs Trinity Road. One of the schools teams had to win, unfortunately the team I was in lost but we still cheered for our school friends. Bishops won their first playoff match but our team wasn’t too fond of a challenge because in a close call our team won 2-1. Both teams knew that they had made the school proud. The teams knew with their performance the school was proud of them winners or not!

Lawford Mead Dodgeball Tournament

By Rhys A

On the 21st April Lawford Mead hosted a dodgeball tournament. There were 6 teams, Lawford A, Lawford B, Roxwell, Trinity Road, Bishops and Kings Road.

There were 15 games in total on two pitches where all the teams played against each other to see who would go through to the Semi Final.

After some close matches, the Semi Finals ended up being Lawford A versus Bishops and Lawford B versus Trinity Road.  After two very enthusiastic semi-finals the two successful teams that reached the finals were Lawford A and Lawford B.

Although both teams played incredibly well, Lawford B triumphed to become the “Dodgeball Champions” for this tournament.
