Today you will see some German children making pancakes (Pfannkuchen). You will meet some words with umlauts and will learn how to say them and experiment with compound nouns.

2. In a table write down any similarities and differences with when / how you have pancakes…
3. Watch the film again and write down any of the words that are shown in the film that have an umlaut (two dots above certain letters, such as ü, ä, ö). Can you work out what they all mean?

5. Challenge: Compound Nouns. You have met 3 compound nouns in the video. German has a lot of compound nouns formed by sticking words together, a bit like lego bricks! You learnt how to do this in Year 4 with our cafe topic.
Pfann+Kuchen (pan + cake) = Pfannkuchen (pancake)
Erdbeer + Marmelade (strawberry + jam)= Erdbeermarmelade (strawberry jam)
Koch + Mütze (chef/cook + hat) = Kochmütze (chef’s hat)
- What happens to to the capital letter of the second word when you join them up?
- Write down more compound nouns you already know or find out any other compound nouns in German. What is the longest one you can find?
- What compound nouns can you make by joining these words up? You can use each one more than once. Try some silly ones too!
6. Optional Activity 1: Find out about “pancake traditions in other countries” and write a fact file of what you find out.
7. Optional activity 2:
With an adult’s help you could try making pancakes (Pfannkuchen) and how about trying one of the fillings the children in the video had? Take photos and send them into Seesaw – how did your Pfannkuchen taste? Lecker (delicious), wunderbar (wonderful), nicht so gut (not so good)?

The children did not cook their Apfelmus, but here is a recipe which involves cooking the apples. You will need an adult to help you with this. https://www.kitchenproject.com/german/recipes/Sauces/Apfelmus/index.htm. Alternatively you could use apple sauce which you can buy from a supermarket ready made in a jar.
